Why just Sundays? …Well, because they were ours… in the morning we stretched out in bed… then ate even the artificial food… After wiping his lips Lajos lit a cigarette, loosened his belt… and I cuddled up to him, because everyone has to have somebody… I was very happy with him… he lived like this door…similar… to the one in the house where I used to be a servant. He had a huge Harley Davidson motorcycle on which we always travelled at top speed, just like in the movie… every Sunday. Then the war started… he was taken away because he was a Jew… What a day it was when he turned up again! By then I had been working as a servant in a big block of flats in Pest, and all of a sudden Lajos was standing at the front door… Since then he was in Pest every Sunday… I thought we made our way in the world… I joined the police, …I wouldn’t be a maid any more… Then I was posted to Tarcsa, to the women, there where the camp was… It was said, that they were all enemies… and I did not think that I was dangerous in my role… only then when Annuska, my commander, was brought into the camp as a person under arrest… I did not understand anything, but nobody was brave enough then to ask questions. Then everything got more and more chaotic… the camp was liquidated, everybody went home… and I was left alone, completely alone, because even Lajos left… I would have sacrificed my life for him… but he left me, he had not sent a message either…But I did not regret anything, although I did not know why he had left me and what the future held for me… It was beautiful… love… true love… and it will always be mine.
